Leawood, KS – February 23, 2021: The State of Connecticut has introduced a bill to increase when a gift card is required to be redeemed for cash. Connecticut House Bill 6215 (HB 6215) was first introduced on January 5, 2021. It has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
HB 6215 provides, “That the general statutes be amended to increase the minimum balance amount for which a consumer using a gift card may request a cash refund.” H.B. 6215 (2021 Sess.). Currently, the Connecticut Consumer Protection Statute states: “If a person uses a gift card to purchase goods or services and the balance on the gift card is less than three dollars after such purchase, the person accepting the gift card as payment, if requested by the purchaser, shall provide the purchaser with a cash refund equal to the value of the remaining balance on the gift card after the purchase.” Conn. Gen. Stat. Ann. § 42-461(c). The bill does not specify the new dollar amount at which the gift cards will be redeemable for cash. HB 6215 was referred to the Joint Committee on General Law.
